The field of plastic surgery has two branches: aesthetic and reconstructive. Aesthetic surgery, also called cosmetic surgery, consists of optional procedures patients choose to improve their appearance or restore a more youthful look and to increase their self-esteem. Such procedures are almost never covered by medical insurance.

Reconstructive procedures include surgery used to correct birth defects, surgery to correct a problem causing functional impairment (e.g. excessively large breasts), surgery to repair an injury, or surgery used to restore the look of the body after damage from another surgery. Such procedures are often covered, at least in part, by insurance. The most common example of this is reconstructive surgery of the breast, in which the breast is rebuilt after a mastectomy or lumpectomy to remove breast cancer. Dr. La Via is skilled in both branches of plastic surgery.
